The Challenge

Joan has battled Poliomyelitis (Polio) for the majority of her life. In 2020, her situation took a challenging turn when she was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The combination of these conditions severely impacted her movement, causing tremors and limiting her balance and mobility.

As a result of her progressive impairment and complex needs, Joan frequently became disheartened. The physical hurdles made it difficult to fully engage in life, resulting in her withdrawing and isolating herself at home. Despite facing these immense mobility limitations, Joan still harboured a strong, unmet desire to engage with her community and participate in local social clubs.

Our Approach

SD Care Agency stepped in to provide personalised domiciliary care right in Joan’s own home. Our compassionate and skilled care team assisted with essential daily tasks, including personal care, meal preparation, and medication management.

Beyond physical assistance, our carers and managers played a vital role in providing emotional support. By lending an empathetic ear, offering words of encouragement, and standing by her side during trying times, we helped ease Joan’s frustrations and fostered a positive, nurturing environment where she felt safe and understood.

“By lending an empathetic ear and offering consistent encouragement, our team helped ease Joan’s frustrations, fostering a highly positive and nurturing environment where she could truly thrive.”

The Impact

The dedication of the care team resulted in a significant improvement in Joan’s quality of life. To further enhance her independence, the agency collaborated closely with Joan’s medical care team to facilitate the acquisition of essential mobility aids, including an electric wheelchair.

This practical step, combined with unwavering daily support in her own familiar surroundings, has empowered Joan to embrace life fully once again. Today, instead of being isolated at home, Joan actively participates in local social activities like knitting and painting, beautifully showcasing her newfound resilience and sociability.
